Study of sickle cell pregnancies at tertiary care hospital

Aim: To study the clinical presentation and complications in pregnancies in sickle cell patients Methods: The study reported findings in 6 pregnant women with sickle cell disease admitted during the period of May2015-June2016. The incidence of obstetric complications, non-obstetric complications linked to sickle cell disease and complications in the new born were analyzed. Results: all the patients followed in the age group of 21-31 years, most were first primi, all were in third trimester of pregnancy, and all are referred cases. Patients presented with variety of complaints such as anemia, joint pain, etc. Hepatomegaly was found in all patients. Intra Uterine Fetal Demise was found in one case. All patients presented with moderate to severe anemia. Cesarean section was done in most of the cases. Conclusions: These study shows that pregnancy is still associated with many clinical and obstetric complications in patients with SCD and there is need to providing genetic counselling and educating SCD women about their disease and followed by a multidisciplinary team in a tertiary hospital.Downloads
