Thyroid Disorders and Biological parameters in chronic kidney disease patients having psychiatric illness

Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a public health problem that tends to take dimensions of epidemic and has serious impact on quality of patients life. Thyroid function disorders are common in patients with chronic kidney disease. Aim: The aim of the present study was to explore the conditions of Thyroid Disorders and Biological parameters in chronic kidney disease patients having psychiatric morbidity undergoing haemodialysis. Materials and Methods: Prospective study included 130 participants undergoing haemodialysis with Psychiatric morbidity. Exclusion criteria were: previous thyroid disorders, systemic illnesses, critically ill patients. Blood samples were taken for standard laboratory analysis, total and free thyroid hormone levels. Results: On comparing patients with and without psychiatric illness and their potassium values, there was a significant association (p 0.05) between abnormal potassium values and psychiatric illness. There was a significant association (p 0.05) between psychiatric illness and total bilirubin values. The thyroid profile, there was a significant association (p 0.05) between abnormal FT3, FT4 values and psychiatric illness. Conclusions: Our study showed that functional thyroid gland disorders are more common among patients having psychiatric morbidity undergoing haemodialysis compared with healthy subjects and reveal their link with time on dialysis.
