Abstract

Personal identification by various means is an important aspect of forensic science. Apart from teeth, which holds valuable potential for human identification, the role of orofacial structures cannot be ignored. One of the areas to be considered is the study of lip prints (cheiloscopy). This paper presents a study done to investigate the scope of cheiloscopy in gender identification. It was observed that lip prints were unique to an individual and the patterns varied among males and females. Hence, there is no denying the fact that cheiloscopy can serve as an indispensable tool in identification along with other traditional methods.
