Aim: To study the effect of vitamin C on tissue ceruloplasmin level following renal reperfusion Materials and Methods:Wistar albino rats were divided into Group I, II and IIIThe Gr. II the experimental groups) were subjected to ischemia for 60 minutes followed by 24 hrs of reperfusion. The Gr.IIIwerepre- treated with vitamin C (20mg/kg.bw) for 30 daysfollowed by 60 minute ischemia and 24hrs of reperfusion. After the experimental procedure was over; the kidneys were removed and homogenized. The homogenized tissue was used for biochemical estimation of lipid peroxidation and ceruloplasmin Result: A significant in the levels of tissue lipid peroxidation (MDA) and increase in tissue ceruloplasmin level was observed in Group II compared to those in Group I (normal control). However, the pre- treated group (GroupIII) showed an increase in the levels of ceruloplasmin and a decrease in lipid peroxidation in comparison to group II.Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that administration of vitamin C prior to renal ischemia reperfusion protect the renal tissue from the free radical induced reperfusion injury.Downloads
